Siccum's Reverse Core Sampler Elevates Sampling Standards in Ongoing Karlshäll Follow-Up Initiative

Updated: Mar 15

The follow-up sampling has commenced within the Karlshäll industrial area, once home to a sulfite pulp mill from 1911 to 1962. This area has been the focus of rigorous environmental scrutiny and remediation efforts.

Following extensive remediation measures carried out between 2020 and 2022, including the salvage of stakes from the bottom and suction dredging of mercury-contaminated sediments, a new chapter in the site's environmental management story begins. These efforts, which treated an area of approximately 37,800 m². Now a detailed follow-up sampling initative is underway aimed at understanding the efficacy of the remediation work.

WSP, on behalf of Luleå Kommun, has selected Siccum's Reverse Core Sampler (RCS) for this task of follow-up sampling. The RCS, with its unique capabilities, high accuracy and efficiency in collecting sediment samples, will be instrumental in collecting approximately 100 samples across the site. This initiative is currently underway, with the goal of delivering all 100 samples by March.

"We are on the way, working diligently with the sampling, together with personnel from WSP"

Tomas Isaksson, Lead Technician at Siccum

"The use of our Reverse Core Sampler in this project not only demonstrates the RCS capabilities but also our commitment on contributing to significant environmental recovery efforts. Collaborating with WSP and on behalf of Luleå Kommun is a privilege"

Jens Eriksson, CEO at Siccum

The following image showcases the exceptional capabilities of the RCS. The RCS is designed to extract samples in distinct layers, effectively eliminating the risk of cross-contamination between these layers. By integrating GPS coordinates, the samples collected by the RCS enable the creation of detailed 3D mappings of the sampling area. This feature proves invaluable in various applications, such as planning for dredging operations. Furthermore, the RCS's innovative sampling capabilities extend to the collection of suspended particulate matter, highlighting its versatility and precision in environmental sampling.

Application of the Reverse Core Sampler

The Siccum Reverse Core Sampler (RCS) is ideally suited for stratified sampling from terrestrial and aquatic environments, such as lake or sea beds, particularly for sediment sampling. Utilizing freeze technology, the RCS solidifies the sample during extraction, ensuring that the samples accurately represent the targeted strata for mapping. The size of the layers to be sampled is adjustable, allowing for flexibility to meet specific project requirements.

The RCS is capable of extracting samples up to approximately 2 meters in depth. In its standard configuration, the working depth of the Siccum RCS reaches up to 2 meters, but it can be extended to accommodate a total working depth of up to 6 meters underwater, achieving a total sampling depth of 8 meters with an extension kit.

Designed for portability, the Siccum RCS operates on 18V Li-ion batteries, making it an efficient tool for fieldwork. It features mounting points on both the central unit and the layer box for easy attachment to various platforms, such as docks, pontoons, boats, or sleds, enhancing its versatility across different sampling environments.
